Waiver of Medical Care

last modified 2008-07-11

There are three areas of care that can be waived by the center physician:  the pelvic examination, HIV testing, and required immunizations.

  • The pelvic examination is required as part of the initial physical examination.  If a student refuses this part of the physical, the physician may waive the examination if it is felt there is sufficient justification.  The waiver and an explanation of why it was granted should be documented in the student's health record.
  • HIV testing may be waived if the physician finds sufficient justification and documents the waiver in the student's health record with an explanation of the decision.
  • The center physician may grant waivers for immunization requirements for medical or religious reasons.  The waiver and an explanation for the decision must be documented in the student's health record.

All students who refuse these services should be counseled before the physician is requested to evaluate the situation and recommend a solution.  Counseling the student may result in their agreement to receive the service, eliminating the need for a waiver.
