Preventing Violence at Sporting Events

- Strengthen the center’s policies on recreational sports programs that address violence and other abusive behaviors by coaches, players, staff, and students. Develop a code of sportsmanship so everyone involved in the sport is responsible for preventing violence. This would include, coaches, players, staff and students. Clearly state what the consequences are and ensure that everyone understands.
- Enforce consequences to make it clear that you don't tolerate violence. There is a zero tolerance for violence in Job Corps. When participants realize that their actions have significant consequences that may affect their future in Job Corps, this may deter participants from engaging in violent behavior at sport events.
- Hand out guidelines or communicate with spectators/students what you consider spectator violence and again the ramifications of a violent act
Use security personnel. Security personnel should have the authority and training to stop violence and maintain control of sporting events. The presence of security personnel reminds participants that there are consequences for violence. Early intervention by security and removal of violent individuals. - Prior to events, the CDs or appropriate personnel should discuss crowd control so rules can be enforced. There should also be a discussion of what students and/or players cannot participate in the event due to any disciplinary concerns or possible gang related activity concerns.
- Recognize coaches, players, students, and staff that display positive behavior at events.
- The CSS standards are designed to promote a positive normative culture. Incorporate conduct at sporting events in relevant standards.
- Dealing with anger and aggression requires a series of discussions and activities for students that are currently apart of our social skills training curriculum and parts of CSS:
- How to know when you are getting angry
- What can you do when you know you are getting angry to reduce your anger?
- Demonstrate and practice anger reducers
- What are the internal and external factors that trigger anger and aggression for you?
- What are the consequences of angry and aggressive responses on the person, the other people involved in the situation, and on the situation itself?
- What behaviors do you have that trigger anger in other people?
