Violence

last modified 2008-06-17

Despite an increased risk for violence among the Job Corps student population, Job Corps remains a safe environment.  The 2003 U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) reported a national violent crime rate of 50.5 violent incidents per 1,000 persons ages 16-24.  During the 2004 program year, Job Corps’ rate was half the national rate—24.6 serious incidents per 1,000 separated students (ages 16-24).  Job Corps also ranks much lower than the national average for homicides (.03 per 1,000 separated students versus .16 per 1,000 young adults).

Although Job Corps is a safe environment, staff need to be able to defuse a violent situation.  This page provides information on evaluating the potential for violence and managing violent students.
