Immunization & Communicable Disease Control Promising Practices

last modified 2008-07-03

Many Job Corps centers have designed innovative and successful programs. If you would like your program to appear on this page contact the Job Corps Health webmaster.

Iroquois Twinrix Immunization

Purpose and Scope: To provide students with an immunization to protect against both Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B in one injection noted as Twinrix.

Steps Required to Implement Practice: In conjunction with the New York State Department of Health, the health and wellness center (HWC) has implemented use of the Twinrix vaccine. This vaccine is offered to all students who will be receiving the Hepatitis B vaccine. This is not a required vaccination for students.Prior to implementation, the health and wellness staff received an educational in-service by a representative from the Department of Health. This information included assessing at-risk students, the benefits of this vaccine, indications and usage, contraindications, administration, safety/tolerance, dosing schedules, and use in conjunction with an in-progress Hepatitis B series. When Twinrix is offered, each student is fully educated on the vaccine in comparison to the Hepatitis B vaccine alone. The risk factors and benefits are also discussed. The student can consent to the Twinrix vaccine in lieu of the Hepatitis B vaccine. For those students in the health occupations trade who are required to have the Hepatitis B series, this vaccine is strongly encouraged.

Resources Required to Implement Practice (not mandatory): This vaccine is supplied free of charge by the New York State Department of Health as part of their campaign to increase awareness and the importance of immunization. Documentation of the number of doses given is shared with the Department of Health for statistical purposes.

Evidence of Success: This program was implemented in July 2003. To date, 38 students have elected to receive the Twinrix vaccine. No adverse side effects have been noted.

Oneonta Flu Shots

Purpose: To educate students on the importance of good health and to encourage them to take the flu shot.

Policy: To educate students on the availability of "self help" measures and how staying healthy relates to employability.

Procedure: The Wellness Center held a dorm competition to heighten student participation regarding the flu vaccine. Contest information was given to students on dorm and in the classrooms. A 19 inch TV, DVD player, and a rolling cart were purchased and set up in the Academy Directors office with a sign that read "Your Dorm Could Win This".

Wellness Center Nurses put together a schedule, went to the trades and classrooms, gave a short presentation and administered the vaccines. Some instructors took the vaccine with their class.

Outcome: We gave approximately 300 flu shots to staff and students. The prize was given to Rosa Parks Dormitory at the awards assembly.
